Introduction
PerkinElmer introduces the new TPS
23B as part of the TPS 23x family for
low-cost remote temperature
measurement applications. It consists
of a silicon (Si) based thermopile chip
in a metal housing with IR
transmissive filter. The Si-chip carries
a series of thermoelements, forming
a sensitive area covered by an IR
absorbing material.
The thermopile sensing principle
allows for broadband IR
measurements. With its optimized
output signal, the TPS 23x family
replaces the TPS 43x series by
offering better performance at a lower
cost.
Properties of TPS 23B
The TPS 23B is a miniature sensor in
PerkinElmer’s isothermal metal
housing in TO-46 size. It is especially
suited for ear thermometer solutions.
The sensor employs a very small
thermopile chip with a 0.5 mm round
active area. The chip is optimized for
a large output signal.
The Si-window is mounted on top of
the can and consists of Perkin-
Elmer’s standard IR longpass filter
with 5.5 µm cut-on wavelength. A
100 kthermistor inside the TO-
housing serves as the ambient
temperature reference.
Isothermal Housing
To provide sensors with extremely
stable signals during rapid ambient
temperature changes in demanding
applications such as medical pro-
ducts, PerkinElmer Optoelectronics
developed the Isothermal Housing.
This patented technology allows for
a fast recovery of the thermal
equilibrium in case of heat flow into
or out of the sensor housing.
In addition, the outside filter allows
a seamless assembly into the
application, e.g. ear thermometer
speculum.
