Energy Efficient Off-line Regulator
The Future of Analog IC Technology
DESCRIPTION
The MP155 is a prim ary-side regulator that
provides accurate con stant voltage regulation
without the opto-coupler, and supports Buck,
Buck-boost, Boost and Flyback top ologies. An
integrated 500V MOSFET simplifies th
e
structure a nd reduces cost s. Th ese feature s
make it a competitive candidate for off-line low-
power applications, su ch as home appliances
and standby power.
The MP1 55 is a green-mode-operatio n
regulator. Both the peak curre nt and th e
switching f requency decrease as the load
decreases. As a re sult, it off ers excellent
efficiency performance at ligh t load, thu s
improving the overall average efficiency.
The MP155 features various prote ctions su ch
as thermal shutdown (TSD), VCC under-voltage
lockout (UVLO), overload protection (OLP),
short-circuit protection (SCP), and open loop
protection.
The MP155 is available in the TSOT23-5 and
SOIC8 packages.

Over Load Protection (OLP)
As the load increa ses, the peak cu rrent and th e
switching frequency increase with the load. When
the switching frequency and peak curren
t
reaches the ir maximu ms, the outpu t voltage will
decrease if the load co ntinues to in crease. Then
the FB voltage will drop below OLP threshold.
By continuously monitoring the FB voltage, the
timer starts when the FB voltage drops below t he
1.7V error flag threshold. Removing the error flag
resets the timer. If the timer continues to
completion at 170ms (fs =37 kHz), OLP occurs.
This t imer duration avoids tr iggering OLP when
the power supply start s up or e nters a load
transition p hase, and t herefore re quires that t he
power supp ly start up in less th an 170ms. A
different switching freq uency (f s) changes th e
over-load protection delay time, as shown below:

Short Circuit Protection (SCP)
The MP155 shuts dow n when the peak curre nt
rises above 450mA as its short-circuit protectio n
threshold. T he power supply resumes operation
after removing the fault.
Thermal shutdown (TSD)
To prevent from any let hal thermal damage, the
MP150 shu ts down switching when the inner
temperature exceeds 150 °C. Dur ing thermal
shutdown ( TSD), the VCC drops to 2.4V, a nd
then the internal high voltage regulator recharges
VCC.
Open Loop Detection
If the V FB drops below 60mV, the IC will sto p
working and begins a re-start cycle. The open-
loop detection is blanked for 128 switching cycles
during start-up.
Leading-Edge Blanking
An internal leading-ed ge blankin g (LEB) unit
between the current sen se resist or inside the IC
and the current co
mparator i nput avoids
prematurely switching pulse termination due to
the parasit ic capa citance. During the blankin g
period, the current comparator is d isabled and
cannot turn off the external MOSFET. Figure 6
shows leading-edge blanking.
